Judy Matheson on Simply Quilts

Did anyone else catch Judy Matheson on Simply Quilts yesterday? She
has a new technique for doing her Mariners Compass quilts using
freezer paper. It was fascinating. She staples her pattern to a
layer of freezer paper and then perforates them with an unthreaded
sewing machine needle. Then she uses them like foundation patterns
except for a few cool tricks. The first is she doesn't actually sew
on the paper. She folds it back on the line and sews right next to
the fold in the paper. She also irons the parts she has already done
to the paper until she is through. Then she just pulls the freezer
paper pattern off and uses it again for another block! She also
demonstrated how she pulls the freezer paper off to iron seams the way
she wants them to go and then irons the freezer paper back on the
fabric.

It was totally amazing. I saved the episode because I want to try her
technique. She says that it isn't really faster than foundation
piecing, but she thinks its a lot less frustrating because you don't
have to pull all the pieces of paper off the fabric.

Neener, neener, neener I took this class from her four years ago when
she was developing it. I hate tearing off the papers when paper
piecing, so I liked her method. Now, if I could only run freezer paper
through the copy machine I could skip the whole perferating thing.

See....you ALL should start signing up for the C&T retreat. You get to
do cool stuff with the authors and learn all their nifty tips that
didn't make it into the books.

Actually, what she did was to make a copy of the design on a copier
and then she stapled the copy to six layers of freezer paper. She
then stapled the whole thing in several places and cut out the
template around the outer edge. She then sewed the lines with an
unthreaded needle.

I've heard of people ironing a piece of freezer paper to a piece of
copy paper and put them through a copier or a printer. I don't know
if it works, though. I would worry about putting just a sheet of
freezer paper through. If it gets hot, I would think the freezer
paper would stick!

It just runs through. I didn't do anything to it but cut to size.
There is some sold commercially that is to size already. That
would probably have a lot of info and suggestions. Regular just
runs right through the ink jet machine for me fine.

I have ironed muslin/cotton fabric to freezer paper cut 8.5 x 11 and run it
through my laserjet printer for quilt labels. The laserjet heatsets the ink
although I do set it with an iron just to be sure.

Marcella, try running thin typing paper or really cheap laser paper thru the
laser, then using a glue stick to paste it down to the back of the freezer
paper. I use a kitchen "thingy" that is like a rubber blade to burnish the
papers together. Works like a charm!! Also, if you can, make the lines 50%
grey instead of black so the laser ink doesn't come off on your iron or
board. One thing about the perforations though is that it does make the
folding part much easier.

I wasn't performing this exact trick, but I did try making copies of
paper piecing patterns by perforating with an unthreaded needle. The
person telling me about it said it was easy. You just put the sheets of
paper together with the one with lines on top. You put them through
your machine "sewing" on the lines. Total frustration! Even with only
2 layers, the needle couldn't get through the paper without folding,
punching, spindling and mutilating. I found it impossible to get a
straight line and instead was making holes all over the place. When
actually paper piecing, I never have that problem. Does anyone know
what I'm talking about and how to fix it?

Bonnie, just jump in and try it with a not too big block. I know I'm going
to give it a try.

If it works you have a new technique at your fingertips If it doesn't work
for you, what have you lost? A very small amount of fabric and an even
smaller amount of time. who knows...maybe in trying to do it you'll come up
with an even better method!

I saw the show, but missed the first 5 or so minutes, but at least got an
idea on what she was doing, wish that I had the vcr going though, maybe will
catch it again on a rerun and then tape it. I myself hate tearing the paper
of PP, and will be trying her method someday.
