What do you call the end slice of a loaf of bread? I've always called
it the nose, and DW calls it the heel.

Crust here too. It makes the start of a great stuffing for Tday, and the
fresh crust can be used to butter ones hot ear of fresh corn without burning
ones fingers. Birds like them, and in a pinch you can slip it past a finicky
toddler but putting it in the sandwich upside down.

Commercial bread in a plastic bag? It's birdfood.

It's only people food for homemade. And you can have my loaf ends, I

I think I heard that "round" thing in Manchester, UK. One person
would ask another if they wanted a "round" of toast. So I waited and
watched.. and then the person would get handed one piece of toast.
(?) How is that a "round"? Especially when it's square?

How are you served a round of drinks? you only get one- and it doesn't
matter how the glass is shaped. It's just as odd.

Older loaves used to be oval. Square loaves are very modern.

Hm... If it's a nice straight slice off a square tin loaf, it's just
the end or crust... If it's an okkard corner off a hand made shape,
it's the 'end' if it's the first slice and the 'heel' if it's the tag
end. Confused? I said in another thread that I have blonde genes... ;D

Genericly, the heel.
Fresh out of the oven, mine.
Off the frothy plaster of paris from the store that passes for bread,
crumb stock.
My gramma used to call it "the keeper", as in keeps the next slice in

Well, so far the votes (sometimes more than one vote per person) are:

Heel.......27
Crust......12
End.........2
Nose........2*
Noggin......1
Ender.......1
Knobler.....1
Butt........1
Hoof........1
Crusty Bit..1
Mine........1**
Coolie......1
Knobby......1
Tiffany.....1***
Otto........1***
Ma'am.......1***
Sir.........1***
Keeper......1

* One person voiced agreement with my calling it a "nose" though I'm
not certain they thought of it before now. I'll take whatever votes I
can get, though I'm not so unscrupulous as to count the
"pope's/parson's nose" references.

** Several called it "mine" or implied that they did, but also
specified an actual name. Only one called it simply "mine."

*** A clearly insane person. Either she experiences great emotional
difficulty bringing herself to eat her food, or you should watch your
loved ones around her when it gets close to meal times.

Also one person abstained but suggested consulting the Dictionary of
American Regional English.

Crust. It's the same in England, New Zealand, Australia and Scotland.
This is the first time in my life I've found out what "heel" means when
